Reinsurance

Merlinos & Associates has extensive reinsurance experience. David Shepherd was a reinsurance actuary, underwriter, and an officer of two different reinsurance companies, most recently serving as Chief Actuary and Chief Underwriting Officer. His decade of reinsurance experience was spent working in virtually all aspects of the reinsurance business. Mr. Shepherd continues to work directly with reinsurers and reinsurance brokers as an actuarial consultant.

In addition to Mr. Shepherd’s direct involvement with reinsurers, all of our credentialed actuaries have addressed reinsurance structure, coverage, and risk transfer issues through work with our primary insurance company clients. Our actuaries are also involved in treaty negotiations, structure development, and analysis for our risk-taking clients.

  • Assistance on the financial examinations of several large reinsurance companies.
  • Analysis of risk transfer characteristics of contracts. This analysis covers, among other issues, the appropriateness of the company’s retention and the magnitude of the protection provided.
Credit Related Insurance

We assisted the NAIC Credit Property working group on drafting a Credit Property Model Act. We directly consulted with the Commissioner of Alabama, the chair of the group.

We have provided assistance with the setting of statewide maximum rates, or prima facia rates, for insurance products where the product’s price is not driven by competitive market pressures or the relationship between losses and premium.

  • Assisted the Alabama department in the setting of maximum rates for property credit products and other regulations related to involuntary unemployment products. Matt Merlino participated in the development of the resulting rules and regulations related to these products.
Accident & Health
  • Assistance on approximately 30 HMOs examinations
  • Assisted with the program development and setting of rates and rating factors for an Occupational Accident program
  • Analyzing the health costs and claim reserves for small and large self-insured entities.
